ISCGB Championship Show - 29/03/2025

Tracy Davies (Montecani)

Thank you to all the exhibitors who entered and to the club for the opportunity to judge my beloved breed once again.
Thank you to both my stewards too who looked after me and kept the ring running smoothly.
I approached this appointment looking for dogs that fit the breed standard and that Italian type that caught my eye all those years ago and once filled the UK rings.
In recent years the breed has come rather generic in type and we have lost that true essence of our breed and the unique features that set Spinoni apart from other HPRs.
I was looking for that all important square outline, beautiful heads, correct angulation and an evident topline. I also looked for the Feminine and Masculine. There should be clear difference between the two, this is always very important in Spinoni.
I found very few truly feminine bitches.
I found boxy heads in both sexes, broad skulls, short muzzles and not the softest of expressions. The Spinone should have a beautiful sweet expression and the head, long, lean with roof like skull.
I was a bit disappointed with the overall quality in the puppy classes. Coats overall weren’t good.
Colour in the browns is slowly improving. All of the Roans were of acceptable colour.
Maloclussion has got worse since I last judged. I noted several with one or both canines still misplaced.
One observation i made on the day was some of the handling. You pay good money to show dogs. A judge has two minutes to assess your dog. If you are stuffing food into it’s face as the judge is looking, or it sits down or twirls around, you could be costing yourself a place. Ringcraft is essential to get your dog to stand like a rock for just a couple of minutes.
There were quite a few soft profuse coats which would have benefited from better presentation.
Spinoni coat should be tough and wiry, no frills or feathers.
Head presentation is paramount. The Spinone head is one of its most beautiful features with its pronounced Occiput, parietal crest, divergent planes and beautiful expression. None of this can be assessed with a load of hair all over the head and face. I found quite a few dogs where the heads could be greatly enhanced by being stripped properly.
Lastly, weight. I did start to despair in the bitch classes as I struggled to find ribs beneath the layer of fat beneath the skin.
This affects the way a dog moves. Spinoni are essentially a hunting breed and should be presented fit for function.

If we have made any errors or omissions in our Spinone results, please
accept our apologies and email corrections to results@italianspinone.co.uk

Preston Very promising and confident w/o puppy. Lovely expression, roman nose and deep muzzle. Square outline with topline evident and correct croup and tailset . Excellent large feet and well boned legs. Good coat and thick skin. Moved very well for one so young. Obviously a first show for his owner. Hope to see more of this puppy.

1st Inostricani Mabel
Kay Absolutely beautiful feminine baby puppy. Long lean head with roof like skull and pronounced occiput. The sweetest expression from her lovely eyes. Excellent bone and Large feet. Lovely to see good feet on an upcoming youngster. Square outline with excellent front and rear angulation. Correct for coat and skin. Moved out very well, I’d just like a bit less weight on her. I will watch her future with interest. She was the stand out puppy on the day, one I could have gladly taken home.
2nd Cartrefyspin Oren Mandarin
Solanot Another extremely promising puppy, full of confidence on her first time in the ring. Not quite the lean head of 1, but she has divergent head planes and good depth to her muzzle. Ears set on well. Eye rim a little loose and eyes still to darken, but very sweet expression. Decent coat, just has a bit of puppy coat to lose. Lovely outline and front and rear angulation all correct. Plenty of bone and good feet. Also lovely on the move. Another new exhibitor who I hope we will see again.

1st Stowledge Soul of Blymara
Blythe Well grown br/r puppy. Very much the stamp of his father. He had the better head of the three in this class. Long and lean with divergent head planes, parietal crest, leading into a short strong neck. Sweet expression, but eye still to darken which will come with maturity. Ear set on level with eye. Excellent depth in body for his age. Correct topline, underline and tail dropping off his croup, tail held correctly on the move. Compact feet. Coat a little soft on his skull and legs, will hopefully improve with age. Best mover in this class, but slightly older than the other two so is naturally more together.
2nd Affilato Jump With Style at Rydonmist
Beecham & Clark This w/o boy has a very sweet disposition. Lovely round eye which gave him a kind expression. Eye still to darken. Masculine head but a tad short in muzzle, however his depth of muzzle was excellent. His ears were a little broad and rounded rather than triangular. Short strong neck. Well boned, short in upper arm, but rear well angulated, clearly showing the tendon. Good coat and thick skin. Correct topline and croup, held his tail horizontally on the move which is always a joy to see. Feet a shade flat and he’s down on pasterns at this stage of development and this showed in his movement coming and going. He’s young so plenty of time to firm up.
3rd Affilato Jump in Time
Williams Litter brother to 2. Sweet expression and nice head with divergent planes. Looked a shade long cast and short on leg compared to 1 & 2. Coat needs quite a lot of attention. Very soft and profuse. Has a tendency to stand cow hocked at this stage of development. Moved out well and held his tail nicely on the move.

1st Kubear Mazzanti of Connomar
Woodward Very strong boy. Lovely long lean head, pronounced occiput and crest, with Roman nose and good depth to muzzle. Ear a shade long. Excellent coat and skin. Excellent bone and large feet. Has a tendency to stand out at elbows and straight in stifle. Just needs to drop into his frame and mature on. Flying his tail with adolescent exuberance. Very Powerful movement.

1st Javal I Am Groot
Serjeant Big rangy young dog. Not ideal to show him in a headcollar, but he is a big strong dog. He needs lots of time to mature but had a lot of breed attributes and when he settled and stood he was very nice . Very masculine head with a typical expression. Short neck. Great bone and feet. 3 dimensional front and good shoulder placement, correct rear angulation showing tendon. Strong movement but tail flying high.

1st Rossetti at Stowledge
Thompson & Bevan Instantly recognisable as an Italian type Spinone. I absolutely love him. One look at his expression and I felt the tears in my eyes. This is what a good Spinone should be, a dog that gives you goosebumps. Absolutely full of breed type. Beautiful work in his head, divergent planes, roman nose, pronounced occiput and the most beautiful expression from dark ochre eyes. Ear of correct length and set on corner of his eye. Wonderful spongy nose. His neck is short and strong, he is square with superb bone and beautiful correct feet. Hocks just a tad short. Perfect coat and skin. Underline correct and Slight rise of topline. Good substance, rustic and fit for function. A dog I would love to own. With males like this in the UK there is hope for the breeds future regards type. I could not ignore such beautiful Italian breed type in the line up so was happy to award him the RCC.
2nd Javal I Am Groot
Serjeant repeat
3rd Connomar Artussi
Godfrey A medium size Italian type male. Not quite the head of 1 & 2, a shade short in muzzle, although like the other shorter muzzles in the entry, it has good depth. Lovely eye and expression. Ears a little long. He is Square but I would prefer less tuck up. Excellent coat and skin. Decent angulation in the rear, showing the tendon, but hocks a little short. His feet were a little flat too. Moved out well but another flying his tail.

1st Rubino Spinone del Mucrone with Riccini
Whittingham, Bexon & Wright My notes say ‘What a Spinone’ He took my breath away as he came into the ring. Like my RDCC this boy is Italian type through and through and what we should be striving for. His outline is a blueprint of our standard. He has a masculine head and expression, his eyes I would like a shade darker, but this should come with maturity. Ears correct length and set on corner of his eye. Short strong neck, leading into three dimensional front. He has perfect topline, croup and underline. Very Typical Spinone rear assembly, showing tendon clearly visible. Excellent depth to his chest. Great bone. Excellent coat and skin Tail held beautifully on the move. His outline on the move is also superb, a typical and powerful Spinone trot with metronome tail, and holding his topline. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to judge this male. Pleased to award him Dog CC and BIS. He’s one of the best Spinoni I’ve ever seen.
2nd Diggmere Baby Bear
Watts Wow has this boy come on since I judged that leggy puppy 2 years ago. Further proving that an awkward young Spinone going through growth spurts can change so much. Beautiful head and lovely expression from his dark eyes. He has dropped into his frame and now presents a very typical outline with the correct topline, underline, croup and tailset. Well boned on good feet. He now has the correct jacket he lacked as a pup, tough wiry and correct length. He moved beautifully, carrying his tail well.
3rd Connomar Cipirello of Roughmoor
Cook Very rustic workmanlike boy. I loved his expression and eye colour. He has the required Divergent planes but muzzle a tad short. Excellent coat and skin. Short, strong neck. Good shoulder and upper arm placement. Correct topline. Little straight in rear. Moved very well with tail held correctly.

Limit Dog . Dog (6 entries, 0 absent) Owner Critique Quality class of 5 square and very typy boys. Only one was a bit too long and low slung for me and overdone in rear angulation, but did have a beautiful head.
1st Fiducia Cho Oyu at Miavita
Giles This boy was right up there with the quality of the CC winners. I absolutely love him. He stood out for type. An old fashioned Italian type Spinone with substance, but still fit for function. Excellent head, reminiscent of those great males from yesteryear. Beautiful expression from his ochre eyes. He is square with correct topline and underline. Good forechest. Solid bone. Excellent thick skin and coat. He is a powerful mover. In the run off, he just carried his tail a tad high. But he’s young and full of exuberance. His day will come.
2nd Diggmere Winwood Ranger
Cayford & Hanscombe Another excellent Spinone, close up to 1st and on a par with the ticket winners, but he was a terrible fidget on the day, giving his owner a hard time. He is of that beautiful Italian type we need to see more of. Square, with the correct topline and underline. He has the most beautiful and typical head, beautiful eyes and a fabulous grouchy expression. One of the best I’ve seen. His coat is excellent for colour and presented beautifully. His front is text book, excellent ratio of upper arm, to shoulder placement. Rear well angulated. He has huge feet, another feature that we are losing in the breed. Moved well with correct tail placement.
3rd Ellisbell Piaggio
Glazik Another very nice Spinone who has matured since I last judged him. Great for type, another showing his Italian lineage. Lovely head and expression, divergent planes and great depth to muzzle. Parietal crest, leading into his short strong neck, good topline and underline. Excellent coat and thick skin. Well boned with large feet. Excellent angulation front and rear, showing those rear tendons. He also moved out well and completed a trio of very nice males.

Open Dog . Dog (2 entries, 0 absent) Owner Critique Two very different types here. Both with their attributes
1st Diggmere Tiger Swallowtail (JW)
Duncan I love this boy, he has the most glorious expression from his ochre eyes. His head stands out, he has divergent planes, correct ear set and a fabulous roman nose to complete a very nice male head. His movement is a dream, with a correctly held tail and perfect footfall. In the final line up, he just looked a little out of coat on his legs and feet against the other boys, but he is a male full of quality and his day will come.
2nd Sh Ch Gradevole Strufolli
Robinson Another of my favourites and a worthy Sh Ch. I gave him a RCC last time. Medium sized male. He hasn’t quite the head of one, although his head planes are correct and correct skull to muzzle ratio. He has has the edge on square outline over 1. He looked a little heavy over the shoulders today. His coat is fabulous, so harsh, correct length and tight fitting. Excellent skin too. Moderate Rear angulation and tendon visible. Couldn’t quite match the movement of 1 on the day, but another one who holds his tail correctly.

1st Riccini Carluccio at Lyndyck
Luff What is it I always say about this breed. They keep on maturing. This boy really looked the part today. Best I’ve seen him. Excellent breed type. Beautiful expression from his round ochre eyes. Correct ear length, great depth to his muzzle, but skull a shade flat. His short strong neck leading into correct topline and underline. Square. Great coat today, harsh, correct length and very thick skin. He moved out really well, enjoying his day. Made me smile.

1st Ulysses Theogonia Black at Dalebourne
Barron & Holdich White and Brown. Workmanlike type boy, well muscled. Very masculine head. Large nose. Hard to assess, seemed a bit apprehensive. Very Dark round eye, but i would like to his to see the coat on his head stripped to advantage to see his lovely grouchy expression. He has good bone and feet, great coat and skin. Moved out very well.

Puppy Bitch . Dog (3 entries, 0 absent) Owner Critique Similar remarks apply to all 3 in this class. My first though was they were sisters but 2nd was not related. All 3 pups were at an awkward stage of development as Spinone pups often are. All very feminine, pretty girls with sweet expressions. I would like to see how they all mature and hope the coats improve.
1st Stowledge Scilla at Incantevole
Kruglow Pretty head, Very sweet expression and lovely eye shape and colour. Earset correct. Narrower all through than 2 & 3, but maturity should fill her frame. She had the best coat of the three. Moved out very well to take the class, holding her tail correctly.
2nd Lucoru Raby
Baber Again a very pretty head and expression. Looking a bit long stacked. Topline and croup evident. Standing a bit bum high at this stage of development. Coat needs attention.
3rd Stowledge Sahara
De Grave The best of the three typewise, pretty head and she has the outline and required substance but I couldn’t forgive the coat, which was thin and cotton wool soft. Hope with work it can improve. Best feet of the 3, correct topline and rear angulation. Moved well.

Yearling Bitch . Dog (7 entries, 0 absent) Owner Critique First 3 very typical and could easily change places.
1st Connomar Ramacca with Bardantop
Guest Very typy old fashioned bitch, I loved her feminine head and sweet but grouchy expression. Her ears are a shade long and held lower than the corner of her eye. She has excellent coat and skin and correct shade of brown. Lovely compact large feet. She is just a shade longer in body than 2 and 3. Rear angulation showing that all important visible tendon. Her movement is an absolute joy as she holds her tail in a horizontal position with the typical tick tock breed feature we have virtually lost. Lovely to see, it made me smile.
2nd Fiducia Chamlang
McGregor Close up and fits the square better than 1. Really beautiful feminine head with that desired round ochre eye that looks into your soul. Divergent head planes. Ears correct length and set. Square outline and she has good front angulation with plenty of forechest, moderate rear. Correct topline and croup. Really lovely to watch on the move, typical ground covering movement, holding her tail correctly too.
3rd Quebaikei Golden Arrow
Giles Fits the brief of feminine. Very typical. An extremely pretty head and sweet expression. Lovely round ochre eyes. Ear set on level with her eye. Parietal crest, leading into a short strong neck. Square and compact, with correct topline and underline and the classic croup and rear assembly. Tad short in upper arm. Carrying too much weight on the day but held her topline on the move and went well when she got into her stride.

Thompson & Bevan I loved this puppy bitch for type, she is very pretty with a lovely head and beautiful sweet expression. Good old fashioned Spinone Rump. She is a nice shape overall, but like so many on the day carrying too much weight. Sadly I could not forgive the coat in the puppy challenge. The soft coat on her body and legs also affecting her colour which was pale and wishy washy. A shame.

Post Graduate Bitch . Dog (5 entries, 0 absent) Owner Critique Mixed class of very different types.
1st Testaverde Fiscal Filcher
Hibbs This bitch won the class on her flawless movement. She outmoved everything in the class, with an extended trot, very pleasing to the eye. Very pretty feminine head, sweet expression with divergent planes and depth to her muzzle. Good earset. Square in outline with correct topline and underline. Moderate angulation front and back. Good coat and skin although leg coat could be tidier.
2nd Quebaikei Heather N Honey for Oaklaw
Lawton Medium sized and very feminine. . Beautiful head and very sweet expression, pronounced occiput, parietal crest and divergent planes. Excellent eye colour which matches her coat and correct shaped eye Excellent front assembly, pronounced forechest and good rear angulation with the tendon visible. Tad too much tuck up. Excellent on the move, just carrying a little too much weigh. Tail held correctly.
3rd Inostricani Show Me Off
Slade Beautiful Roan with a extremely pretty, long lean head and lovely expression. Correct shade of brown and good coat. Tad upright in shoulder. She is well boned, square in outline, correct topline, good depth of chest. Well angulated rear. Moved well.

1st Dewdhala Sempre Agnese (JW Jww 24)
Wagh Found what I was looking for here in terms of Feminine. She has a beautiful head, with divergent planes, pronounced occiput, correct ear set and length, she reminded me of Spinoni of old. Lovely old fashioned expression. She has a lovely typical outline, square, with plenty of substance, correct topline that she held on the move. Neck looked a shade long, possibly as she was craning to look for someone outside the ring. She was very unsettled, so had a tendency to stand over angulated, but managed to get her act together to win the class and when stood still was very nice indeed. Good croup and tail held correctly on the move. Coat needed a good tidy to enhance her beautiful head and please lose the frill on the front. She has an excellent chest without the frill.
2nd Diggmere Cortona Sofia del Riccini
Whittingham, Bexon & Wright Workmanlike bitch but still retaining femininity. Beautiful ochre eyes and sweet expression. Earset good. Her head has matured since I last judged and depth of muzzle has improved. Short, strong neck. Topline breaking in the correct place, slight rise into her croup. Excellent upper arm and shoulder placement. Correct underline. She has the textbook Spinone rump and rear angles with tendon clearly showing. Good bone and feet. A joy to see such an excellent and correct coat and thick skin, no frills. Powerful movement, just flying her tail a little again today.
3rd Quebaikei Accossato for Oaklaw
Lawton Very pretty head and sweet expression. Roman nose, correct earset and length. Medium sized. Very square, typical outline but carrying too much weight. Good forechest and moderate rear angulation. Holds her topline on the move and good croup and tailset, holding her tail down.

Open Bitch . Dog (5 entries, 1 absent) Owner Critique 4 very nice bitches
1st Annilann Temptress del Michiamo (JW)
Anderson & Mayne Another super feminine bitch who caught my eye immediately she entered the ring. A very beautiful and typical Spinone, medium sized and square in outline. Her head is lovely, so pretty with the correct divergence and pronounced occiput. sweet expression. Ear just a shade too long. Her movement is excellent and her tail is now held correctly on the move. My last critique on her, she still had that puppy exuberance and tail held a bit high. Good forechest and front and rear angulation. Correct topline and underline. Just needs a little more presentation of her coat on head and legs for me to give that appearance of rustic Spinone. She stood out on the day and was unlucky to meet the beautiful veteran so had to settle for the RCC, but her day will come very soon I’m sure.
2nd Swiss Sh Ch Inostricani Amore (Aw23)
Light Really Close up to 1 and on a par with the CC and RCC winners. I loved her. Very pretty and feminine. Excellent head with divergent planes and sweet expression. Correct friars frock colour, lovely to see the colour improved across the entry. She fits the square perfectly, short strong neck leading into correct topline, which rises slightly leading into an excellent rump and tailset. Excellent leg to body ratio. Rear angulation is correct with the tendon clearly visible. Lovely movement, holding her topline on the move. Excellent precise footfall. I really liked her, I feel her day will come very soon.
3rd Diggmere Gignese
McGregor Roan with a really typical, feminine head and beautiful eyes giving her that sweet expression that is so important in Spinoni. One of the best heads of the day. Scored in head over 4th place. Lovely outline, good front assembly, correct topline and underline. Good rump, tail just falling from the croup. Coat on her body was excellent, but on her legs and feet just a little bit soft, but rear tendon was still visible. Moved out well with good footfall.

Bruce My penchant for the Veterans continues. This super 9 year old girl caught my eye the moment she walked into the ring and my heart melted when she looked at me with that true Spinone gaze. Everything about her says ‘Spinone’ She is a very worthy Show Champion. She matched my Dog CC for type and quality. Such a Sweet kind expression from her round ochre eye. Ear set and length correct. She has plenty of substance, rustic, looks like she could easily do a day’s work. Square in shape with excellent chest and angulation both front and back. Super coat, thick skin. Excellent bone and feet. Her ground covering pounding movement was a joy to watch. Very typical, holding her topline and her tail held down. In the final line up I couldn’t stop looking at her and was pleased to award her the CC RBIS and BVIS.
